What does a furnace tune-up include?
Every $49 tune-up covers the same eight points on one heating system. Your technician tells you what they found before anything else is done.
- Overall operation of the furnace or heating system
- The burner flame
- The heat exchanger, for signs of cracksSAFETY
- Chimney operation (the flue draws properly)SAFETY
- Air filters, cleaned or replaced as necessary
- Furnace protections such as the limit switch and rollout switch
- All electrical connections
- Contactors and capacitors
Two of those are safety checks rather than efficiency checks. Inspecting the heat exchanger for cracks and confirming the chimney draws properly are how a combustion appliance is kept from putting flue gases into the house. That is the part of a tune-up worth having regardless of what it saves on a bill.
Is a furnace tune-up worth it?
For most homes, yes, and mostly for two reasons that have nothing to do with a sales pitch.
It checks the safety parts
A furnace burns fuel inside your house. The heat exchanger and the chimney are what keep the combustion gases out of the air you breathe, and the limit and rollout switches are what shut the burner down when something is wrong. None of these announce a problem on their own, which is why they are on the list.
It finds small problems early
A clogged filter, a weak capacitor or a loose electrical connection is a small fix on a mild October afternoon. The same part failing on the first freezing night means a cold house and an emergency call. A tune-up is the cheapest time to find it.
